  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from OXFORD DON -- MISCONCIEVED : An immense disappointment. This work offers absolutely nothing new but repeats ground covered by scores of previous works while offering nothing novel in fact or interpretation. The author seems to have used this work as a dumping ground for a myriad of interviews of war time victims of the two regimes. Concluding:See those two were pretty evil weren't they? The comparisons were trivial and vacuous. How the publishers readers approved this is a puzzle. ( Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2021 )
  • from C. M Mills -- TOP 500 REVIEWER : An excellent dual biography of Hitler and Stalin during World War II ( 5.0 out of 5 stars )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Charles Wainwright -- ww2 book : like to read ( Reviewed in the United States on April 20, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Julie Merilatt -- A Must-Read : Rees is incredibly successful with this dual biography of the most notorious figures of the 20th century, focusing specifically on the war years. He compares and contrasts the men who were ultimately responsible for the worst atrocities in an approachable way. One perfect example is that Hitler delegated while Stalin was too paranoid to do so. That’s how Stalin doomed his army after the Great Terror, since any remaining officers, “…realized that initiative and fresh thinking were now potentially fatal attributes.” There’s a definite juxtaposition when you consider Germany’s successful campaign in Western Europe: “Imagine if [Hitler] had ‘purged’ these generals in a similar way to Stalin. Is it conceivable that this victory would ever had happened?” ( Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Well Red -- Extremely readable account of this terrible period in history : I chose this book to read over Christmas this year and was worried it may be a little heavy going given the subject matter. I needn't have worried; the prose is so nimble that you are never overwhelmed by scale or detail. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 19, 2021 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Jane Griffiths -- Were they alike, or weren't they? : Well, yes and no. Er, that's it. A workmanlike history, that seems I look at personality. I think there's a bigger book to be written in this, maybe has been, for all I know. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 6, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from C. Catherwood -- Magnificent and definitive : A magnificent and definitive book that will be THE book on the subject for years to come. It is a superb distillation of years of work by Laurence Rees, all of which I have bought, read and enjoyed. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 16, 2021 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Peter -- Decent : Decent read but I could have written it myself ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 1, 2020 )
